Surveying to Start on Online Access Guide
16 July 2010North Down Borough Council has commissioned DisabledGo, an award-winning disability organisation, to produce an online guide detailing accessibility information on more than 300 local venues throughout the Borough.
The team of surveyors from DisabledGo will be working and living in North Down from Monday 26 July 2010 to produce the online access guide for the area, which will be available at www.disabledgo.com and www.northdown.gov.uk from October 2010.
The guide will rate local attractions, services and businesses and, as each one will be receiving an ‘in-person’ assessment, users can rely on the information provided. By logging on, users will be able in a matter of seconds, to access information about toilet facilities, parking and adapted rooms, together with very specific details such as the height of tables, dimensions of lifts or the positioning of fixtures and fittings. The guide will provide a central information point for disabled people, their families and carers to help them determine whether a particular venue is suitable to their needs.
Commenting on the initiative, Chair of North Down Borough Council’s Disabilities Working Group, Councillor Ian Henry, said: “Once it goes live, the DisabledGo access guide to North Down will enable people to check, for example, whether a hotel offers adapted rooms, whether there are changing facilities in the leisure centre to meet their individual needs, or whether a restaurant offers menus in large print or Braille. The guide is specially designed to answer the everyday questions of disabled people, their assistants, carers, family and friends. It aims to provide information that will give people with disabilities the knowledge they need to access facilities independently. It is sure to be a very well used resource.”
Notes
www.disabledgo.com is the largest national access guide, covering over 80,000 venues across the UK and Ireland, including cinemas, hotels, hospitals, colleges, sports grounds, restaurants, dentists, tourist attractions - the list goes on and on. The service is completely free to user and does not require you to register your details.
